At St Mary’s, we are all historians! Right from the beginning in Nursery and Reception our children begin to learn about the past, whether that be places, events or people. Our vision for history is rooted in fostering a sense of curiosity and enquiry amongst our pupils. We believe that every child should be engaged in exploring the past, utilising the Key Stage History scheme which emphasises enquiry types and disciplinary knowledge. Our approach is designed to build a robust understanding of historical concepts while allowing students to delve deep into the questions that matter most to them.
We recognise that history is not just a series of dates and events; it’s about connecting our pupils to the world around them, past, present and future. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the diverse needs of all learners, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to flourish. By integrating oracy and outdoor learning as key drivers within our history curriculum, we aim to create a vibrant learning environment, where discussions and explorations can thrive. Whether it’s debating the consequences of historical events or venturing outside to investigate local heritage, we seek to ignite our pupils' passion for history.
Our ultimate goal is to construct a chronological map of the past within the minds of our children. We aim for our pupils to not only remember historical facts, but also to understand their significance and relevance. To support this vision, we actively connect with our local community, using the rich resources they offer. This collaboration enriches our curriculum and enables our pupils to draw connections between their studies and their own lives, ensuring that history is seen as a living subject, full of relevance and intrigue.
At St Mary’s, we believe that every experience counts. From visits to local museums to inviting guest speakers from various historical backgrounds, we are committed to providing a variety of experiences that inspire and educate. In doing so, we aim to nurture well-rounded learners who appreciate the complexities of history and its impact on today’s world. Together, we are building a brighter future by learning from the past.
