To kickstart their D&T topic on Pavilions and Structures, Year 4 investigated the structural integrity of bridges through a practical marshmallow-and-skewer bridge challenge.

Working collaboratively, we first planned and sketched our bridge designs, thinking carefully about how different structures could provide strength and stability. Year 4 then constructed their ideas using marshmallows and wooden skewers, testing how well their designs could support weight.

As they tested their bridges, pupils evaluated what worked and identified areas for improvement. They adapted and developed their designs, considering how they could make their bridges longer, stronger and able to hold more weight while maintaining stability.

The activity encouraged pupils to apply design thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and structural engineering principles, providing an engaging introduction to the concepts they will explore throughout their Pavilions and Structures topic.
