Science: Practical Digestive System

Year 4 have begun their Science topic on Animals, Including Humans, by looking at the Digestive System! We made our own version practically, focusing on our key terms and exploring how food goes through the body. We mashed up bananas, using forks as the teeth. Then we poured our food down the 'oesophagus' and into the 'stomach' (a plastic bag), where it mixed with stomach acid and digested the food. We then went through the small and large intestine by pushing our digested food through some tights, before arriving at the rectum – which we represented with a cup. With a hole in the cup, we push our food-waste out of the body to complete the digestive system representation.

Pupils were very knowledgeable with their key terms and vocabulary, as well as describing the process and why they were completing different parts of the experiment.
