Bringing the World into Our Classroom with Picture News

At St Mary’s, we use Picture News, an educational current affairs resource designed to help children understand the world around them. Each week, real-world events are brought into the classroom through age-appropriate stories, engaging activities and thought-provoking questions.

Picture News gives our children the opportunity to discuss events they may have seen or heard about in the news, helping them to make sense of the world in a safe and supportive environment. It encourages children to ask questions, listen to different viewpoints and develop their own ideas and opinions.

Using current affairs in this way supports the development of important skills such as critical thinking, communication, empathy and confidence. It also gives children a genuine voice, encouraging them to express their thoughts respectfully and consider perspectives that may be different from their own.

We believe that learning should help children become curious, thoughtful and informed members of their community. Picture News helps us to do just that by bringing the world into our classroom and giving our children the knowledge, confidence and skills to engage positively with it.
