Art and Design

At St Mary's Catholic Primary School, we use the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme of work to deliver a rich, engaging and progressive curriculum that inspires creativity, imagination and self-expression.

Through carefully sequenced units and a spiral curriculum, pupils develop their knowledge, skills and understanding across drawing, painting, sculpture, craft and design while studying the work of artists, craftspeople and designers from a range of cultures and historical periods. Children are encouraged to generate their own ideas, experiment with different media, refine their techniques and evaluate their work with increasing confidence. Through the Kapow curriculum, key artistic skills and concepts are revisited and built upon over time, ensuring progression and helping pupils to achieve the expectations of the National Curriculum.

By taking part in high-quality art experiences, pupils develop creativity, resilience, critical thinking and confidence in expressing themselves, while gaining an appreciation of the diverse world around them.
